Water Conservation in the Multi-Res Rental Housing Sector
Water Conservation in the Multi-Res Rental Housing Sector
Canada is known for its abundance of freshwater. In fact, Canada has 7% of the world's renewable fresh water.
However, with population growth, expansion of industry, increasing levels of development activity, changes in the political environment and the potential for climate change impacts, there is increasing pressure placed on our water resources. Especially in urban populations, increasing demand, climate change, and the high cost of replacing aging infrastructure make water conservation and reduction strategies increasingly important.
Installing low flow showerheads, faucets, aerators, and high efficiency toilets, use of Water Sense and Energy Star rated appliances, addressing water leaks and drips and the use of xeriscaping, rainwater harvesting and greywater systems are just a few relatively simple measures that can be taken to reduce the water footprint of our multi-res buildings.
Property Managers have another tool that can be used in the quest for water conservation ...the residents who live in your buildings.
While in most multi-res rental buildings, residents do not directly pay for their water, this does not mean that residents can't be encouraged to reduce water and to even champion water reduction and conservation strategies.Engaging with residents to conserve water makes good sense!
PSN - Performance Solutions Network Corp has tools and resources specifically geared to the multi-residential rental housing sector that can help you to positively communicate, engage and partner with your residents around water conservation. Check out just some of the resources, that can readily be used or modified to meet your own corporate needs and communication messaging.
Creating effective strategies and opportunities to engage with your residents around sustainability-related issues doesn’t have to be complex or difficult.
To assist, PSN - Performance Solutions Network Corp. has developed a number of activities relating to water use and reducing water consumption. This includes a resident focused water consumption attitudes survey, water-wise quiz and eye-opening information on our water footprint.
Try out the quiz and Water Footprint Game and then contact PSN for further information on how to gain on-going access to these resources for your residents and employees.
Posters can be used as ongoing reminders or prompts for residents about the importance of reducing and conserving energy.
Where possible, posters can reinforce simple messages like “Every Drop Counts”, and the importance of reporting water leaks and drips. High visibility locations throughout the building should be used for water conservation awareness posters.
Remember to rotate posters to keep residents interested and aware.
PSN - Performance Solutions Network Corp. offers a series of visually appealing high impact "Every Drop Counts" posters that make promoting water conservation and highlighting your organizations commitment to water saving measures an easy process. Contact us for further information on how to access these posters.
Encouraging residents to use environmentally preferable habits both while in their apartment home and when out and about in the community, can help to minimize our collective environmental impact and help us to reduce carbon emissions.
While large scale retrofits and building focused upgrades are important and can reduce the environmental impact of our buildings, equally smaller scale actions that each resident can take, are also important. PSN - Performance Solutions Network Corp. has created energy saving tip sheets that highlight actions that can be taken in rental apartment communities to conserve energy and that highlight small actions can make a difference.
